It’s Just Movies

When Jared Hess’ directorial debut, “Napolean Dynamite,” first came out, a friend and I went to the theater to watch it.

Apparently, we saw two different movies, because while I loved it, she dubbed it “The worst movie ever made.”

When it came out on DVD, I bought it, of course, and watched it with a different friend. I still loved it, and this friend did as well. The two of us watched it again a few days later and were still quite entertained.

After a few days of hearing the second friend and I do the impersonations and say the catchphrases, the first friend reluctantly agreed to re-watch it. After seeing it a second time, she decided that it was far from the worst movie ever made. In fact, she said, it was actually quite entertaining.

So it was with no small amount of anticipation that the three of us went to see Hess’ next movie, “Nacho Libre.” However, this time we were all in agreement and walked away disappointed. None of the three of us have seen it a second time, so maybe it plays well in additional viewings — but I sort of doubt it.

This brings me to “Gentlemen Broncos,” Hess’ third movie (scheduled for a limited release Oct. 30). Since I loved one of Hess’ movies and didn’t really care for the other one, I didn’t have any expectations for this one. Was “Napolean Dynamite” a once in a lifetime spark of brilliance or was “Nacho Libre” simply a sophomore slump?

As I haven’t seen the movie yet, I still don’t know, but the featurettes I have seen so far haven’t filled me with much hope.
