When “Up” came out this past summer, it caught many people, myself included, by surprise by its impeccable, beautiful rendering of the marriage between Carl and Ellie. It is many people’s favorite moment in the film, and its power looms over the rest of it.
Here is a little two-minute featurette showing the creation of those characters, from drawings to models to storyboards and final images. It contains the same sweet music that underscores their montage in the film and it traces both characters from their childhood through old age. It’s a lovely picture of animation done right. Animation that stays true to its characters central idea and guiding spirit. And it shows the care the Pixar folks take in their characters. I like it. You should, too.
