It’s official: Andrew Garfield is the new Peter Parker in the “Spider-Man” reboot. After weeks of speculation about a “short list” of potential actors reminiscent of all the “Captain America” casting guessing games, on Thursday director Mark Webb selected Garfield as his Spidey.
Garfield may not be familiar to most American viewers, but the British actor has gained a lot of praise for his roles across the pond in films like “Boy A,” “Red Riding” and “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.” There has also been some early buzz about his performances in the upcoming “Never Let Me Go” and “The Social Network.”
Other actors up for the role included Jamie Bell, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane, Aaron Johnson, Anton Yelchin and Josh Hutcherson, who as recently as Wednesday was rumored to be the top choice for the role.
I’ve never seen any of Garfield’s movies, but I’ve heard nothing but positive things about his work. I’m sure he’ll be able to handle playing Spider-Man, but I’m curious as to why Webb selected a 26-year-old actor when the reboot is sending Peter Parker back to high school. Since that has been repeatedly emphasized as a key point of the reboot, I was inclined to believe the rumors about 18-year-old Hutcherson being cast.

i heard some very good stuff and that he is a very solid actor. I havent seen his work myself either. But i hope he does very well with the role. I was wondering too why they picked the oldest tester for the role. Since we knew they wanted to go back to highschool. But of course tv/films always have older folks playing younger. So that could be the case here. Or i heard a rumor there is a chance the script could be altered from highschool to college. But i dont know how valid that is.
