What if you had made mistakes in your life you wish you could take back? Are there moments you want to do over to see how much differently you or your life could have been? If you found out there was another you, would you want to meet them, see how your lives compared?
In “Another Earth,” a bright young astrophysics student at MIT named Rhoda (Brit Marling) is driving when she sees something in the sky that shouldn’t be there. As she intently gazes up at it, she hits another vehicle killing the family inside. After spending four years in jail, she is released and goes to find the widower of the family she killed (William Mapother).
The object in the sky is called another earth, a duplicate planet that just appeared in the heavens. When contacted, it is revealed that there is a copy of each human being on that planet. Plans are made to go explore this strange new Earth. Rhoda plans on going, so she enters the lottery drawing with an essay about her experience. Is it possible to escape the pain she has caused and would life have been different for her if she was on “Another Earth.”
The concept is very intriguing and seems like it could be a great movie. The one aspect that really seems interesting from this trailer is that Rhoda seems to befriend the widower and it looks as if they might even become romantic — and he has no idea that she is the one that killed his family in the accident.
Directed by newcomer Mike Cahill, who also co-wrote the script along with its star Brit Marling, this small movie premiered at the 27th Sundance Film Festival in January to a standing ovation. Fox Searchlight Pictures bought it and will be distributing it to theaters. With an unknown cast, small budget and an unknown director, this film feels like it could be a breath of fresh air for audiences all over the world.
“Another Earth” will open in limited release on July 22 before expanding to more theaters over the next few months.
