A sequel is defined as a literary work, movie, etc., that is complete in itself but continues the narrative of a preceding work. I generally become squeamish at the site or sound of another sequel making the scene in the film world. It is rare that a sequel surpasses or even maintains the same level as an original in my world. I’m not saying it hasn’t happened or will never happen, I have simply developed a sequel shield, if you will.
Part of the problem in the sequel game is that a lot of films fail to cast original players for one reason or another. This dampens my appetite quite a bit. Luckily, “The Expendables 2” managed to bring back most of the cast from the first film, which raises my spirits somewhat. However, I’m still hesitant because the title in itself is an oxymoron. Expendable means something is designed to be used only once and then abandoned or destroyed.
Action-wise, “The Expendables 2” looks quite fun and entertaining. I enjoy a good car crash here and there, maybe a couple good punches to someone’s face. The fun factor is sewn directly into a movie such as this. I am torn between wanting to see it and not even entertaining the thought. On one hand, I am all in for a romp with the boys — Jason Statham in particular — but on the other, I can’t overlook one simple yet oh so corny one liner in the trailer. Arnold Schwarzenegger spits out, “I’m back.”
“The Expendables 2” has a big name cast and some promising action, all the ingredients to make such a sequel as likeable, if not more so, than the first movie. I am not completely sold on the idea or the film. I plan on waiting for feedback from my friends and family before I decide on whether or not to see this in theaters We all know it’s becoming increasingly more expensive to go to the movies and it has truly become a gamble with our nonexpendable finances.
