Often, when you see a sequel you have a preconceived notion that it is not going to be as good as the first. And more times than not, you would be correct. Rarely does a sequel outshine the original. Writers Cory Edwards, Todd Edwards, Tony Leech and Mike Disa (who also directed) have learned from that. They have taken what worked in “Hoodwinked” and built on it. The story is a familiar one, but “Hoodwinked Too: Hood vs. Evil” is a fun adventure.
An evil witch (Joan Cusak) has kidnapped Hansel and Gretel. As Granny (Glenn Close), Wolf (Patrick Warburton) and Twitchy (Cory Edwards) attempt to rescue the pair, the rescue goes awry and Granny is also taken. The head of the HEA (Happily Ever After) team, Mr. Flippers (David Ogden Stiers), has to call Red Riding Hood (this time voiced by Hayden Panettiere) back from secret training to help rescue Hansel, Gretel and Granny. The wild chase and the nods to different films and genre begin. You have to pay attention or you could miss a few and all through the film, the singing goat is back. You have to love a good running gag.
As the plot unfolds, we find that the witch is looking for a recipe for the all-powerful truffle — whoever eats it, becomes invincible. Soon it becomes evident that the witch is not working alone.
The bantering between Red and Wolf gets a little tiresome after a while — and they could have used a few new lines in there — but all in all, it moves along at a nice pace. On the plus side, it was nice to see Cheech and Chong in a movie together again, even if it was just their voices.
“Hoodwinked Too” is in 3-D — but not the annoying, things-come-flying-at-you version. The 3-D is used more for the effect of making you feel like you are there. As tired of 3-D as I find myself getting, I did enjoy this film in 3-D. In addition, I was very impressed with the cast of voice stars; aside from the main cast, the film also includes the voice talents of Amy Poehler, Brad Garrett, Martin Short, Danny Pudi and Wayne Newton.
If you liked the first one, you’ll love this one. If you didn’t care for the style or humor of the first, maybe it would be best if you steer clear and perhaps give it a shot at home.
