A Clip from ‘Smallville: Absolute Justice’

— by BEN FOWLER —

OK, I must warn you that before I start this article, I am extremely geeked out by this preview for Smallville’s upcoming two-hour event. I will try to control my fanboy-isms for the duration of the article, but no promises …

So, as we said, “Smallville” has released a clip from the “Absolute Justice” TV movie due to be aired next week. Details have been kept under wraps until recently, when we’ve had a handful of teaser clips, preview images and the official “Absolute Justice” description from the CW [SPOILERS CONTAINED WITHIN]:

DC COMICS’ CHARACTERS HAWKMAN, STAR GIRL AND DR. FATE FROM THE JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA MEET UP WITH CLARK AND HIS TEAM IN A SPECIAL TWO-HOUR EVENT; PAM GRIER GUEST STARS — A man named Sylvester Pemberton tracks down Chloe (Allison Mack) and tells her he knows about her team of superheroes and needs their help. However, before he can explain who he is, he is attacked and killed by Icicle (guest star Wesley Macinnes). Clark (Tom Welling) and Chloe’s (Allison Mack) investigation leads Clark to the former headquarters of the Justice Society of America where he meets up with Nelson AKA Dr. Fate (guest star Brent Stait), Carter Hall AKA Hawkman (guest star Michael Shanks) and Courtney AKA Star Girl (guest star Britt Irvin). Courtney pleads with Hawkman and Dr. Fate to help her catch the killer that is targeting their group but they are reluctant to resume their duties as superheroes. Clark, John Jones (guest star Phil Morris), Green Arrow (Justin Hartley) and Chloe team up to help the JSA stop Icicle before he murders another member of the group. Meanwhile, Lois (Erica Durance) receives a package from a mysterious agency called Checkmate, run by Amanda Waller (guest star Pam Grier). Geoff Johns wrote the two-hour episode. Glen Winters directed the first hour and Tom Welling directed the second hour.

The preview below reveals so many tantalising details, I’m geeking out just trying to type. We see Clark discover the long abandoned headquarters of the Justice Society. This clip was released to freak every SV geek out tenfold! As Clark pulls back the dust sheets covering the various items and furniture, we see glimpses of a Green Lantern, mask and power ring, Jay Garrick’s “Flash” helmet and I even caught a glimpse of Hawkgirl’s avian-styled headpiece. Calm Ben, keep calm … The big reveal is when Clark uncovers the JSA team photo, as it were, and we get a glimpse of some of the members. Fan’s with their x-ray vision enabled may be able to catch sight of Hourman, Sandman, Mr. Terrific, Wildcat, Doctor Mid-Nite, The Flash, Hawkgirl and others, too. Unless they have been keeping a big BIG secret, we will probably not get to see these characters in the flesh, but we will have Hawkman, Star Girl and Dr. Fate.

The “Smallville” team have really gone all the way up to 11 with this TV movie (geek points to anyone who can link that reference with SV…). I really hope that now they seem to have their house in order with respects storylines and character development, that after the inevitable climax come the end of season 9 or possibly 10, that TV or DVD movies released every two or so years will be the way to keep this beloved and hotly-debated take of the Superman mythos in our hearts and on our screens.

“Smallville: Absolute Justice” is due to air on Feb. 5.
