Katherine Heigl has become something of a romantic comedy staple since her departure from “Grey’s Anatomy.” But she’s about to take her typical rom-com formula up a notch with a little action and a New Jersey accent to boot.
Heigl will play lingerie buyer-turned-bounty hunter Stephanie Plum in “One For the Money,” the big screen adaptation of the first book in author Janet Evanovich’s successful mystery series.
Stephanie is recently divorced and unemployed, and accepts a job at her cousin’s bail bond business in Trenton, N.J., to make ends meet. As she learns the ins and outs of being a bounty hunter and deals with her loud and meddling family, Stephanie’s first assignment sends her after a cop/murder suspect named Joe Morelli (Jason O’Mara), a former fling from her past.
I’ve never read any of the Stephanie Plum novels so I can’t say whether or not Heigl is a good fit for the role, or if the trailer matches the tone of the book, but the film should come with a built-in fan base. Evanovich’s 17 Stephanie Plum books have been bestsellers, with an 18th installment set to hit shelves in November. Evanovich reportedly first sold the movie rights to “One for the Money” before the book was even published back in 1994, and it has been stuck in development hell ever since. If the first film does well I imagine Lionsgate would be eager to pursue sequels, though I doubt they’ve planned as far ahead as an 18th chapter.
“One For the Money” hits theaters Jan. 27. Check out the trailer below.
What do you think? Are you a fan of Evanovich’s novels? Do you think Heigl and the Lionsgate team will do them justice? Sound off in the comments section.
