A Featurette from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’

— by JOSUE SANCHEZ —

They say some people are born to play a particular role. They said it about Chris Reeve’s Clark Kent/Superman, and they said it about Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone, and, most recently, I have heard people say it about Robert Downey Jr.s’ Tony Stark/Iron Man. Agree, disagree? Well how about Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow?

I remember when I first heard of “Pirates of the Caribbean” years ago — I wasn’t excited. I had seen previous attempts at pirate movies and had been very disappointed. But I could not have been more wrong. I was enchanted, and highly impressed with “Pirates” and have been a fan of its sequels. So, as you can imagine, I am looking forward the upcoming installment, titled “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” This time around, it seems they are after the fountain of youth, which was hinted at the end of the last movie.

Although much of the cast is returning — excluding Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley — most enjoy and looked forward to the Jack Sparrow character the most. So now, we will find out if he can carry the movie on his own. We also will get to discover new characters , such as Penelope Cruz’s Angelica and Ian McShane’s Blackbeard character. The lovely Gemma Ward is also in this next installment playing the character of Tamara. But, never fear, we will still have Captain Barbossa, played by Geoffrey Rush.

But returning to my original statement, to me it is all about Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow. And he is back, full force. Johnny Depp can never be accused of not putting his heart into everything he does. Especially when folks online have been rumoring he was done with the franchise and wanted to move on. Well, it seems he is not going anywhere. Especially since it has recently been announced that screenwriter Terry Rossio has already been hired to draft the next sequel.

Now, one thing people sometime forget about “Pirates of the Caribbean” is that it’s a Disney movie — despite the frightening images and violence — and that brings us to the clip below. It is a Disney’s Infonet Movie Surfers behind-the-scenes interview with Johnny Depp. The questions for Depp are simple, down-to-earth questions, they are excellent. Check it out and enjoy.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will hit theaters May 20.
