Poster: Man of Steel

— by JOSUE SANCHEZ —

Like many Superman fans, I had all my attention burning towards any and all info released or leaked for the upcoming “Man of Steel” movie during this past weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con.

If you weren’t there, it might be days before we get a peek for the teaser trailer released at the convention. Sure there were some low quality versions of it on Youtube, but they were quickly taken down. So, I am now waiting for high a quality version of the trailer. And should we not get it online this week, I will be there front and center at IMAX this upcoming weekend for “The Dark Knight Rises” movie release, where we will finally see the “Man of Steel” trailer in style.

One thing SDCC non-goers did get online is the first official high quality poster for “Man of Steel.” See it below.

What can I say about it? It looks crisp, clean and detailed. It has darkness and it has light. It’s just a close up image of Superman’s head and chest, but I can tell and interpret so much from this photograph.

Some people are saying the trailer had a dark-ish feel to it. Almost an “autumny” look to it. Well, I think “Superman Returns” had an autumn feel to it as well. What does that mean anyway? In my opinion, Superman must be a beacon of light, and he must also be of high morals, so as long as these qualities aren’t excluded from this interpretation, what does it matter the style of cinematography an artistic director such as Zach Snyder (“300” and “Watchmen”) chooses for his story-telling?

But then we get this poster, where we see what I have been sensing for some time now. A special attention to detail that must not go unnoticed. Superman, played by Henry Cavil looks flawless. Though we don’t see much of him, what we do see is majestic. His suit — which has been the center of much controversy from some fans, mostly due to not having the red trousers Supes has always worn — is now visible at close range. It displays great detailed embroidery with a chain-link style weaving material. This gives the suit a metallic look that is proper for the Man of Steel. I don’t think Ma Kent sewed this suit up for Clark like in previous Superman versions. But, I don’t think the suit’s origin was explained in the Christopher Reeve movies either. Personally, I am loving this poster, and it has already become the background in all my phones, tablets and computers.

What do you think about it?

“Man of Steel” will fly into theaters on June 14, 2013. It stars Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Christopher Meloni, Michael Shannon, Lawrence Fishburne and many more.
