Seven Clips from ‘Your Highness’

— by ALLISON HIGGINBOTHAM —

It’s always a disappointment when your expectations aren’t met. You see a movie to watch your favorite actor, only to find out their role is a cameo that lasts all of five minutes. The concession stand employee gave you coke instead of diet coke. You see “Eyes Wide Shut” expecting it to be a slasher film. Fortunately, I didn’t have to dish out ten bucks to see that “Your Highness” was the opposite of what I expected.

Billed as a comedy, “Your Highness” is set in medieval times and features an ensemble cast. Danny McBride and James Franco star as two princely brothers, Thadeous and Fabious respectively, who are trying to rescue Fabious’ bride to be, Belladonna (played by Zooey Deschanel) from the evil wizard Leezar (played by Justin Theroux). Along the way the two brothers join Isabel (played by Natalie Portman), who has vowed to kill Leezar.

If you’re a fan of etymology, then things are already starting to look bad. When I watched the clips below for “Your Highness,” I didn’t crack even a smile. Before you start thinking I’ve got no sense of humor/am too sophisticated a palette, just know that I still laugh easily at childish things. But the clips painfully try to grasp at the crudest forms of humor. Leezar mocks Belladonna, Isabel unexpectedly starts to beat up Thadeous and, most revolting of all, Danny McBride tries to inject humor into a rape scenario. Overall, these clips are not selling the film.

According to an interview with director David Green, the dialogue was mostly improvised. This could account for a lot of the lack of humor. The majority of the cast does not come from a comedy background, which affects the delivery among many other things.

Perhaps “Your Highness” is your type of movie, though. Watch the seven clips below and see for yourself. “Your Highness” opens April 8l.

For how funny the red band trailer was for this film, these clips dont seem to be on par with it.
