Short Film Theater: ‘The Terrible Thing of Alpha 9’

— by KYLA DREWETTE —

Created by Jake Armstrong as part of his senior project at the School of Visual Arts, “The Terrible Thing of Alpha 9” is a short animated film with a heartfelt and memorable story.

The project took Armstrong approximately one year to complete using primarily Adobe Flash. The character designs and animation are fairly simple, but still manage to display Armstrong’s skill for detailed character expression, despite a lack of dialogue.

Interestingly, “The Terrible Thing of Alpha 9” screened at a film festival in La Roche Sur Yon, France, and was a favorite of the Children’s Jury, who decided to write to Armstrong expressing their love for the film.

The creator posted the letter on his personal blog (along with the children’s adorable spelling and grammatical errors):

    Dear Mister Amstrong,

we really loved your movie. When we were told that it was your first movie, we were really impressed : it looked really good!
We really hope that you will make another movie because this one was great, and we are already looking forward to watch it!

    Sincerely,
La Roche Sur Yon’s Child Jury
