Three Clips From ‘Up in the Air’

— by RACHEL COYNE —

In case you haven’t already had your fill of George Clooney with the recent releases of “The Men Who Stare at Goats” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” you have the upcoming comedy-drama “Up in the Air” to look forward to.

In “Up in the Air,” Clooney is Ryan, a professional corporate downsizer, whose job it is to travel to various failing companies and deliver the bad news to the employees deemed “expendable.” But despite the ugliness of his career, Ryan loves his jet-setting life where he’s never in one place long enough to form any attachments.

Then his boss hires a young upstart who wants to introduce a way to teleconference these downsizings, thus putting a major crimp in Ryan’s lifestyle and hurting his chances with the female frequent flier he recently had a connection with.

In a trio of clips, we get to see Clooney doing what he does best; being smarmy, yet charming. First he walks us through his airport routine, then we get to meet his boss (played by Jason Bateman), and finally he spends some “quality” time with the girl who is threatening to destroy everything he’s built for himself.

“Up in the Air” touches down in theaters starting Dec. 25.

This is becoming the must-see movie of December for me. I really can’t wait to see it. I love the look of the film, the way the editing is at a clipped pace. All very nicely done. Jason Reitman is growing into one fine filmmaker.

Jason Reitman seems to be shooting for the title of this generation’s Billy Wilder. So far, he’s off to a really good start.
