Trailer Talk: ‘Eclipse’

— by ALEXA MILAN —

It feels like it was only a couple of months ago that screaming girls were lining up to see “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” Oh right, that’s because it was. Wasting no time to capitalize on the current vampire fad, Summit Entertainment is releasing the third installment in the franchise just slightly more than six months after “New Moon” broke box office records.

The teaser trailer for “Eclipse” doesn’t give away much other than laying out the major conflicts addressed at the end of “New Moon.”

1) Bella (Kristen Stewart) wants to be with Edward (Robert Pattinson) forever, so she wants him to turn her into a vampire, which he’s finally agreed to do as long as she marries him first. 2) If any of the Cullens bites a human, the treaty with the werewolves is off, so Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and his pack and come after them. 3) Since Bella knows about the existence of vampires, the Volturi will kill her if she doesn’t become one too. 4) Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) still wants to kill Bella since Edward killed her mate, James. And 5) Jacob is in love with Bella too.

All of these dilemmas come to a head in “Eclipse” as the Edward-Bella-Jacob triangle intensifies and the Cullens and the werewolves have to put aside their differences, at least temporarily, to protect Bella from Victoria.

Much like the previous movies, “Eclipse” will undoubtedly make tons of money, attract swooning women of all ages and earn poor reviews for its lackluster writing. I’ll admit I enjoy “Twilight” as a guilty pleasure. “Eclipse” is my favorite of the books because it’s more action-driven, but you wouldn’t know it from the trailer. Perhaps the full theatrical trailer will show more of that side of the story.

This time, David Slade of “Hard Candy” and “30 Days of Night” is in the director’s chair, but rather than bringing his typical dark touch to the series, this trailer looks very similar in style to “New Moon.” We also get our first glimpse of a fierce-looking Howard as Victoria, who replaces Rachelle Lefevre.

“Eclipse” hits theaters June 30.

So what do you think? How does “Eclipse” look like it will stack up against the other two “Twilight” films? Check out the trailer below and sound off in the comments section.

I skipped the second movie, only saw the first one while staying in La Paz, Mexico and tickets were really cheap. Read the first book, had trouble finishing the second one and could not stomach the third one. Went straight to the sex scene in the fourth one and wasn’t impressed. It’s another “cash cow” for the producers, studios, writer etc…It’s the vampire gift that keeps on giving but from an artistic point of view I don’t think this installment will be any more inspiring than the book was. Maybe on DVD if I’m truly bored.
