Trailer Talk: ‘Glee: The 3D Concert Movie’

— by ADAM POYNTER —

Being an international phenomenon over the past two years, it is no surprise that the hit show “Glee” is finally hitting the big screen, but not in the way you would expect. This summer was the second annual “Glee Live!” concert tour and for those not lucky enough to be able to attend one of the sold-out affairs, don’t worry because the concert is coming to you.

“Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” is coming to your local theater for a very limited engagement to allow every “gleek” the opportunity to see their favorite group of misfits hit the stage and perform some of the biggest musical numbers from seasons one and two. The four-week U.S. tour was recorded — in 3D no less — and will have a limited two-week run in the U.S. They will use footage from many different concerts and include the special guest performances that might have only happened at one particular concert.

Shot as half documentary and half a rocking concert, the film will blend lots of behind the scenes footage, rehearsals, interviews and a look at all of the actors in a way you have never seen before. Think of the Justin Bieber concert film “Never Say Never,” the basic layout will be like that, with less emphasis on childhood and more on the journey each actor has taken in the past few years since being involved in the hit show. We now have a trailer that gives us a look at the movie and some great footage from the concert and behind the scenes. The concert film is being directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who directed 2009’s “Fame,” and is being produced by “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy.

As you saw, all of our “Glee” favorites are there performing, even Jane Lynch — who plays Sue Sylvester — got in on the concert action. The only main cast member that I’m not sure about is Matthew Morrison — who plays the lovable teacher Will Schuester — who has been away working hard on his upcoming self-titled debut solo album.

You probably want to know which songs will be in the movie and you are in luck because they are also released a soundtrack album featuring the songs they are singing live in the film. The soundtrack for the movie is being released and it has all 23 songs performed in the concert.

“Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” has performances by Cory Monteith, Lea Michele, Dianna Agron, Chris Colfer, Chord Overstreet, Heather Morris, Kevin McHale, Naya Rivera, Mark Salling, Amber Riley, Harry Shum Jr., Jenna Ushkowitz and Ashley Fink, plus a special performance from Darren Criss and “the Warblers” and a few surprise guest stars from the show.

The film will open in theaters Aug. 12. As of now, they are only saying it will be a limited two-week special engagement, but if it does well I can see them extending it for a while longer.

Tickets for the movie are on sale now and you can even buy a fan package, including some cool “Glee” memorabilia. Location listings and fan packages can all be found HERE.
