Trailer Talk: ‘Pretty Bird’

— by ALLISON HIGGINBOTHAM —

We’ve all been fooled by trailers. We see a trailer and think a movie is going to be awesome and then we are sadly let down. On the flip side, there are times when a trailer cannot show all the best parts of the film and we are pleasantly surprised when we watch the movie. Trailers are all about selling a film to the widest audience possible. The trailer for “Pretty Bird” makes me want to watch the film as much as I want to watch paint dry.

The trailer below gives us a little set up to the story. A man (Billy Crudup) is trying to set up a business in personal rocket propellers, but needs help from two others, one of which is a rocket scientist (Paul Giamatti). That’s what I got from the trailer anyways; with so little dialogue it’s kind of hard to tell. As for a genre, the production style seems to go towards drama with some dry humor mixed in (hopefully).

Other than giving us a little plot and tone, this trailer doesn’t sell “Pretty Bird.” We get to see a few famous actors’ names with corresponding awards, but unless you’re really into one of these actors (or love personal jet packs) this probably isn’t a film you’ll be lining up at Blockbuster for.

“Pretty Bird” is headed straight to DVD on June 29. It stars Billy Crudup, Paul Giamatti, David Hornsby and Kristen Wiig.
