Trailer Talk: ‘RED’

— by ALEXA MILAN —

What’s possibly more dangerous than James Bond and Jason Bourne combined? Helen Mirren with an enormous gun. They might be a little past their prime, but the eclectic characters at the center of “RED” can still whip their younger counterparts into shape.

Based on the DC Comics graphic novel by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, “RED” (which stands for Retired Extremely Dangerous) follows a group of retired CIA agents who are forced to revisit their special agent skills to uncover a government conspiracy. Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) has been living a quiet life since retiring from the CIA, but all that is interrupted when he and his former team — Joe (Morgan Freeman), Marvin (John Malkovich) and Victoria (Helen Mirren) are framed for assassination.

In their heyday, they were the CIA’s top agents. But even though they’re now retired from the agency, the secrets they know have made them a target. The team reunites and relies on years of past experience to uncover the truth.

I think this movie looks like a lot of fun. If nothing else it’s a fresh take on the action comedy, and the cast alone is enough to have me sold. In addition to Willis, Freeman, Malkovich and Mirren, Mary Louise-Parker, Karl Urban, Brian Cox, Julian McMahon and Richard Dreyfuss round out the ensemble.

“RED” opens Oct. 15. What do you think of the trailer? Are you more interested in traditional secret agent films, or does the thought of Mirren taking people down with a sniper rifle intrigue you? Sound off in the comments section.

I am absolutely excited for RED, with dissapointing tradional spy films like “Killers” coming out recently, I thought this genre needs to be turned on its head to keep it alive. All amazing actors this movie is sure to be entertaining at worst and who knows, maybe the senior is the new rookie!
