“The Expendables” reads like a who’s who of action stars: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger. However good or bad this summer blockbuster might be, it’s got one heck of a cast.
Directed and co-written by Stallone, the film revolves around a group of mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a dictator in South America. Stallone is the group’s leader, Statham his second in command, Li a hand-to-hand combat expert, Rourke an arms dealer, Willis the man who hires the Expendables to track down the dictator and Schwarzenegger Stallone’s old rival.
This is one of those movies where the plot really doesn’t matter. You don’t see movies like this for a story. You see movies like this to watch an all-star cast of action heavyweights beat people up and blow stuff up. And if that’s what you want, that’s probably what you’ll get from “The Expendables.” It doesn’t look like my cup of tea, but it does have an incredible cast and should be a treat for anyone who loves this genre.
