Trailer Talk: ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’

— by ALLISON HIGGINBOTHAM —

When I first saw the title “The Lincoln Lawyer” I thought the film was going to be about Abraham Lincoln’s days as a lawyer. I was really hoping to see an image of Matthew McConaughey with a cool hat and an impressive beard. Unfortunately, the trailer for “Lincoln Lawyer” let me down in those respects.

The trailer below, however, looks like a dark “who-done-it” film. McConaughey plays a lawyer, Mickey Haller, who works out of his Lincoln (hence the name). He mainly does petty criminal kind of stuff, until the case that could make his career comes along. Haller must defend Louis Roulet (played by Ryan Phillippe), who is charged with rape and attempted murder. While the case should be straight forward, Haller soon finds himself in dire straits.

From the trailer it looks like “Lincoln Lawyer” will take its place among the political action type thrillers. However, the film looks grittier and darker than the usual John Grisham go about. It’s not just the seedy plot that gives it that vibe. The color scheme switches from bright, blue skies to the gritty undertow of the city. That combined with the fast paced editing in the trailer, gives the “hold on to your seat” vibe.

It’s good to see Matthew McConaughey in something other than a terrible rom-com these days. It’s also good to see Ryan Phillippe in anything these days. Judging from the trailer, though, we could be seeing these two in some pretty disturbing situations.

“The Lincoln Lawyer” will hit theatres March 18, 2011. It stars Matthew McConaughey, Ryan Phillippe, Marisa Tomei, William H. Macy, and John Leguizamo.

I love the cast. I’ll see just about anything Tomei does.

I agree with you Allison. It’s def nice to see Matthew back in a drama. I really dug him in A Time To Kill and Frailty.

    Wow Allison,
This trailer is excellent. Like you, I’m glad MMc is not in another silly rom-com and like you I hope it portends a great thriiler. However, also like you, I worry that it might portray some disturbing events. Good review. You’ve got me wanting to see this.
