“Trepan Hole,” an animated short film by Andy Cahill, is definitely interesting and very avant-garde. The description on the Web site for the Slamdance Film Festival, where the short played earlier this year, describes the film as “Squiggling, spastic, rail thin creatures with clay souls and throbbing heads bounce off each other for six minutes.”
In a nutshell, that’s essentially what the film is. Two spindly creatures are created and then create things themselves, fusing their talents before clashing with each other. All the while, the characters are surrounded by the titular trepan hole.
I’m sure the film contains a deeper meaning, though it is difficult to discern exactly what that is. Perhaps it’s about the process of working together, and how even when differences arise and ideas clash, we all ultimately still share a common bond.
