After more than 10 years of reigning over the pop charts, vocal powerhouse Christina Aguilera is finally ready to make her acting debut. In “Burlesque,” Aguilera plays Ali, a small-town girl from Iowa who moves to Los Angeles to become a star. She finds the Burlesque Lounge, owned by a former dancer named Tess (Cher, in her first movie since 2003). The lounge is down on its luck and has a temperamental leading lady, Nikki (Kristen Bell). Tess hires Ali as a waitress, and Ali eventually starts performing and gets to fulfill her dream. She becomes the star of the Burlesque Lounge, and I’ll take a wild guess and say this causes some problems with Nikki.
This musical features old and new songs and an all-star cast, including Stanley Tucci, Eric Dane, Alan Cumming, Peter Gallagher and Julianne Hough.
In the clip “Something’s Got a Hold on Me,” Ali is at work in a bar/restaurant. She flips the sign on the door to “closed,” puts money in the jukebox and then dances and sings her little heart out to Etta James’ tune “Something’s Got a Hold on Me.” Aguilera, of course, nails it. At the end of the song, she looks around forlornly, realizing she’s not performing on some big stage but, I’m guessing, in her hometown of Iowa. Not to worry, Ali — you’ll be headlining the Burlesque Lounge soon enough!
Head to the lounge when “Burlesque” comes to theaters on Nov. 24.
