DC Comics’ Booster Gold Gets Picked Up by Syfy

— by ANDY BEHBAKHT —

It looks like Warner Bros./DC Comics is bringing another comic book character to the small screen along with “The Spectre” and “Deadman” — and this is one I never expected: Booster Gold.

Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Syfy has ordered a pilot script from Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions and will serve as a writer along with Andrew Kreisberg (“Fringe”) – with both also serving as executive producers.

THR also has a description for the project:

The story will center on Booster Gold, a washed-up athlete from the future who travels back to the present in hopes of becoming the greatest super hero of all time. Instead of chasing criminals, however, his main priority is chasing fame and money. But Booster Gold discovers that being a hero takes more than just a megawatt smile, and that the future doesn’t happen without first protecting the present.

I must admit that I never thought Booster Gold would a candidate to hit the small or the big screen in a stand-alone production. This would mark Booster’s second time in a live-action series, as he had an appearance in the final season of “Smallville,” where he was portrayed by Eric Martsolf.

I think it would be interesting to see an actual show about him where he seeks fame and status as an hero. My candidate for the character would be none other than Eric Martsolf himself and if not him, then “Chuck’s” Captain Awesome, Ryan McPartlin. Honestly, I haven’t been this excited about a TV show from DC or Marvel: I’m looking forward to the others, but a Booster Gold show – now that is just pure gold.

This would not be the first time Berlanti would handle a super hero production – he was an executive producer for TV’s “No Ordinary Family” and the “Green Lantern” movie, for which he also co-wrote the screenplay. He is also rumored to be part of “The Flash” movie that hopefully actually happens some day. Since I loved “Green Lantern,” I totally have faith that Berlanti will do this show justice as well.

Stay tuned for more information about “Booster Gold.” In the meantime, who would you cast in the title role?
