Female Leads Being Lined Up for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’?

— by ANDY BEHBAKHT —

Recent news about the third and final Batman installment has been very limited. We learned a few weeks ago about the title and also that the Riddler will NOT be the villain of the movie. Back in October, it was reported that Tom Hardy had joined the cast for the third movie but there is no information about what role he’s playing. Also, the movie will not be in 3D.

Deadline reported yesterday that director Chris Nolan is now apparently meeting up with actresses for two female lead roles. Reportedly, one of those roles will be a love interest for Bruce Wayne while the other will be a villain.

Deadline has listed six actresses Nolan is going to meet:

It’s interesting that Lively is being included even though she is part of another DC movie, “Green Lantern.” If both of these roles are DC characters, there is a possibility Lively will not be considered. However, it’s also quite possible that the love interest is a new character and I would love to see Lively along with Christian Bale.

One thing I thought about when I saw Portman’s name in the list was about the rumor that Warner Brothers was considering her for the “Superman” reboot as Lois Lane. Could this mean she’s not interested in that role or perhaps that rumor was false? Whatever this means, I’m kind of relieved she might be part of the “Batman” franchise instead of “Superman.” The only actress I want to see as Lois Lane is Erica Durance, but that’s not my point of this article. And while I have nothing against Hathaway, I can’t see her in a “Batman” movie. She’s a good actress but she just doesn’t seem to fit here. I could see the other actresses — Weisz, Watts, Knightley and Portman — as considerable choices for the villain.

Now moving on to a question that has been floating around for a while: Which characters could be in the film? So far, we haven’t had a single DC female role in the Nolan’s version and since this is the final movie Nolan will do of Batman (in all likelihood), he might actually bring at least one familiar DC female. One thing that we have to remember about Nolan is that in his choice of DC characters, he tries to use villains that are as realistic as possible. Vicky Vale, Catwoman and Harley Quinn would seem to be the roles that could fit best into the world of Batman that Nolan has created (after any supernatural parts of the characters are taken out). Poison Ivy isn’t really Nolan’s style and even though Nolan is fantastic at making these DC characters in realistic forms, Poison Ivy wouldn’t fit in very well with this Batman.

Then there is the role that Tom Hardy might play. So far, how many of the male characters have been a consistent ally? Alfred and Gordon are the only ones that I can think of. So far we have seen Scarecrow, Ra’s Al Ghul, Two-Face and the Joker. So the chances that he’s playing a villain are strong. Since this is the final movie, we could perhaps expect a big villain and we already know that Mr.Freeze (Nolan confirmed that a couple of months ago), the Penguin (I’m sure I saw that somewhere) and the Riddler are cut from the list of potential male villains. Studio chatter says Deadshot is the likely scenario, but we will have to wait and see.

“The Dark Knight Rises” will be directed by Chris Nolan and production will start early next year. Stay tuned for more information about casting and more. In the meantime, are you excited to possibly see any of these actresses in the final “Batman” movie? Who do you think Tom Hardy will play? Discuss and leave comments!

The only choice I like is Rachel Weisz. I’m hoping this is a false rumor created to throw off the media. Hehe.

I suspect Talia Al Ghul will be the villainess. Thematically, she makes sense and would act as a nice book-end to Nolan’s trilogy. As for Hardy, I’d say he’ll either be Deadshot, Black Mask or Hush.
