The entertainment world hasn’t heard much from Hilary Duff lately aside from her stint on “Gossip Girl,” but unfortunately her latest film, “According to Greta,” doesn’t look like much of a comeback.
Duff plays the title character, a rebellious and suicidal teenager who has made a list of things she wants to accomplish before she dies, followed by a list of possible ways to kill herself before her 18th birthday.
Unsure of what to do with her troubled daughter, Greta’s mother (Melissa Leo) sends her to spend the summer with her grandparents (Ellen Burstyn and Michael Murphy). Greta is initially unhappy about having to spend the summer in her grandparents’ cable-less home, but she ultimately receives a new outlook on life after falling for a cook at the restaurant where she works (Evan Ross).
At least her character in “According to Greta” is a bit of a departure for the usually bubbly Duff, but overall the film looks like one that’s been done a hundred times before: troubled young person is changed for the better by their love interest and some time away from home. But having the fantastic Burstyn and Leo in the cast works in the movie’s favor.
“According to Greta” is now playing in limited release.

I will skip this one!
There are untapped reservoirs of jokes to be made comparing Duff’s career to suicide, but who can make the effort?
Hilary Duff is high profile, but she should call up Carey Mulligan from “An Education” and start taking notes.
Worse than even I could have imagined.
