I am so glad this movie has been brought to my attention, and I’m just as shocked that it slipped past my radar. I am talking about “Despicable Me.” As soon as it was mentioned it to me, I went into a search rampage. I saw the trailer, read all the plot summaries and fell in love. Oh, and did I mention it’s an animated movie? Just check out the style of the art in the two posters we are presenting to you below — don’t they have a French version of “Dr. Strangelove” style to them?
The movie stars Steve Carrell (need I say more), and he plays the villain, intrigued yet? I am, and moreso when I read he is going to play an evil mad scientist, hidden from the world, plotting against it. It has a kind of Dr. Evil meets Lex Luthor feel to it. It also stars the voices of Jason Segel, Kristen Wiig, Ressell Brand, Will Arnett and Julie Andrews.
Check out what the official Universal Pictures write up had to say: In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon. (Yes, the moon!) Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. The world’s greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.
Yes, “Despicable Me” will be going up against a lot of competition with its release date (it will be released July 9), and I am afraid it will slip between the cracks of the masses. Yet, I can’t help but think this could be a diamond in the rough, and I for one will be adding it my list of movies to watch this summer. I can’t stop looking at the art, it’s so cool.

The trailer sold me on this one. It looks like it will be a lot of fun.
