Poster Peek: ‘Dinner for Schmucks’

— by ALLISON HIGGINBOTHAM —

I never noticed that Steve Carell and Paul Rudd have the same color eyes. To be fair, it’s not exactly obvious to see the similarity unless you’re looking at the poster for their latest comedy “Dinner for Schmucks.”

The poster below is an uncomfortable close-up on half of Steve Carell’s and Paul Rudd’s faces. Carell looks overly joyful while Rudd looks unnecessarily serious. Given what I’ve seen from the trailer, this poster manages to sum up the film perfectly.

In the film, Tim (Rudd) plays an executive rising up the corporate ladder, but just needs one prerequisite to make it further. He must bring some hapless fool to a dinner party. This hapless fool ends up being Barry (Carell), an IRS employee. Barry soon becomes friends with Tim even when he learns what Tim is up to.

Like I said before, the poster is uncomfortable and for those of us who have seen the U.S. version of “The Office,” we know Steve Carell can do painfully awkward comedy that makes us feel uncomfortable. However, the film also looks like it can have its heartwarming moments. Let’s just hope that like the poster, the film can be both serious and joyful without being too cheesy or ridiculous.

Also starring Ron Livingston, Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Schaal and Bruce Greenwood, “Dinner for Schmucks” will start taking reservations on July 23.
