Short Film Theater: ‘Old Fangs’

— by ALLISON HIGGINBOTHAM —

With so many animated movies being 3D (but not actually playing in 3D), it’s nice to see films with 2D drawings. The short film “Old Fangs” looked more like a cartoon you’d see on Nickelodeon than a Pixar movie.

“Old Fangs” tells the story of a young wolf who travels with his friends to see his father, who long ago abandoned him. When he meets his father, however, he wishes he hadn’t. After the young wolf leads the father becomes remorseful. Like I said before I liked the animation for this film. It worked well with the slow pacing and story.

One thing I didn’t like, however, was the sound. Quality-wise it was fine, but the cut between natural sound (crickets, wood creaking) and music was disjointed. I would have liked to have more music and better transitions from natural sound to music. Also, this short was too long. Even though the entire short was 11 minutes long, the narrative did not take that long to be told. It probably could have been about three minutes shorter.

“Old Fangs” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and you can watch it in its entirety below.
