Short Film Theatre: ‘Meet Meline’

— by KYLA DREWETTE —

Independently created by Sebastien Laban and Virginie Goyons, “Meet Meline” is a short animated film about a young girl’s discovery.

The film, which was created with no budget and has taken over two years to complete, tells the story of Meline, a girl who enjoys spending summer days in her grandparents’ barn drawing pictures of an imaginary creature. Meline however, is suddenly sent on an exciting adventure (for a 6-year-old) when she is unexpectedly visited by the creature of her fantasies.

The film’s animation, lighting, camera angles, and musical score are especially impressive. Although Meline never speaks, the music, combined with her movements and facial expressions, clearly indicate her many emotions (such as curiosity, excitement, and fear). Additionally, the backgrounds and set designs are incredibly detailed and realistic, and the various camera angles provide interesting and advantageous perspectives.

A simple yet heart-warming story, “Meet Meline” is sure to bring a smile to your face.

Cute, yet kind of creepy… The animation style is very Final Fantasy-esque.
