Six Clips From ‘The Private Lives of Pippa Lee’

— by ALEXA MILAN —

Based on the plot description, “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” looks like it could be a hit or a miss. But given that it’s written and directed by Rebecca Miller, the writer behind “The Ballad of Jack and Rose” and “Proof,” this movie may turn out to be the kind of character-driven indie I’m often drawn to.

The film centers on Pippa Lee (Robin Wright Penn), a kind and serene 50-year-old woman beloved by all who know her. But when her husband (Alan Arkin), who is 30 years her senior, moves them to a retirement village only to have an affair with an even younger woman, her peaceful world is threatened. This potentially life-shattering event brings back memories of her troubled youth, a time when she wasn’t the happy and secure woman people know today.

The story flashes back and forth between young Pippa’s (Blake Lively) traumatic upbringing and her present-day struggles.

I think this movie has the potential to be a pretty interesting character drama, and the cast alone makes me want to see it. In addition to Penn, Arkin and Lively, the movie features Julianne Moore, Maria Bello, Winona Ryder, Monica Bellucci and Keanu Reeves.

Check out the six clips below to get a better feel for the film. “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” is now playing in limited release.
