Strange Things Afoot at Marvel Studios

— by BEN FOWLER —

Marvel Studios has hired screenwriters Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to pen a script for their spell-casting hero Doctor Strange. The screenwriters have previous experience working on the upcoming movies “Conan” and Jon Favreau’s “Cowboys and Aliens” and err … video game “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.” Doctor Strange has had a long meandering journey thus far on his quest to reach the big screen. He’s been passed from studio to studio and director to director, including Wes Craven, David Goyer and Guillermo del Toro, until Marvel got the rights back and brought him back into the family.

Created in 1963 by comic book legends Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Strange was a different kind of hero. Instead of the brute force usually preferred by our superheroes, Doctor Strange learned to tap into his “psychic powers” to defeat the bad guys with his mind rather than his muscle.

So where do Marvel go from here with the character? Who could you see directing a Doctor Strange movie? Who could play the titular Master of the Mystic Arts? More importantly, do you really think this film can get past the developmental stage? Sound off in the comments box at right.

I actually ran across Dr. Strange late in my childhood while I was still infatuated with comics and I loved this character. His “being the master of the Dark Arts” and where his powers come from is completely different from the rest of the popular Super Heroes. I would love to see this movie get made, no one in particular comes to mind to play him, but it would neeed to have a fresh andd gritty director!
