We’re a step closer to a “Tomb Raider” reboot. GK Films just hired screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby to pen the script. If those two names sound familiar, it’s because the duo also co-wrote screenplays for both “Iron Man” and “Cowboys & Aliens.” Sounds promising, yes? I certainly think so.
Fergus and Ostby are definitely competent writers and it is my opinion they will add more depth to the iconic video game character. Lara Croft has been a favorite of mine. Although the video game has lost its luster through the years, there is no ignoring the stronghold it’s had on our culture.
Angelina Jolie made a fantastic Lara Croft, but let’s be honest, the films weren’t that great. The first was fun and exciting; however, the second was tough to sit through. Come to think of it, my friend and I walked out of the theatre 30 minutes in. But “Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life” didn’t ruin the franchise for me. Always the optimist, I figured years down the line, someone else could pick up the franchise and do it justice. Perhaps GK Films can do just that.
In an announcement released today, Graham King’s production company stated the film would be an origin story that “solidifies her place alongside Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor in the pantheon of great female action heroes.”

Question is, who will direct this project? Since he’s worked with Fergus and Ostby before, Jon Favreau would be a good fit. But how about changing things up and choosing a female helmer? Angelina Jolie, who finished directing “The Untitled Bosnian Love Story” last winter, knows the Lara Croft character very well. This, in addition to her action-star status, makes her a good choice, too.
So, what do you think about this recent development? Does this project pique your interest? Are you anxious to see an updated “Tomb Raider” film? Sound off to the right with your thoughts.

I love a good video game movie! Or at least I would if they ever made one worth watching.
