Trailer Talk: ‘Tekken’

“Tekken” is another film based on a video game franchise and we all know there are only a limited amount of them that are decent. “Mortal Kombat” is also a great video game, but when it came time to make the movie, they didn’t do quite the job everyone was hoping for. These fighting films all do have one thing in common, usually some fairly well-done fighting scenes.

With “Tekken,” it seems to me they definitely have awesome fighting scenes along with some mediocre acting, but to be honest, this film looks fun enough to watch for just the fighting alone.

The film centers on Jin Kazama, who enters the Tekken tournament to put to rest the ghosts of his past. He faces fierce and dangerous competition featuring the world’s best martial artists; also following close behind him is Zheng, a rebel monk who is looking to save Jin from his own inner demons. While on the surface Tekken appears to be the corporation of the future, Jin and Zheng expose a dark underbelly that could threaten the threads of humanity.

For those of you who are interested in where this lies within the gaming universe, the trailer may have some spoilers. The story’s chronological placement with the games is not yet known, except that it is after “Tekken 2.” However, it is highly likely that it is based on “Tekken 4,” due to the presence of Kazuya Mishima and absence of characters such as Asuka Kazama and Jinpachi Mishima. Furthermore, Jin Kazama has the intention of killing Heihachi Mishima, which means that it is after his betrayal in “Tekken 3.”

“Tekken” was written by Michael Werb, Michael Colleary, and Hans Rodinoff. The director of the film is Dwight H. Little, and the screenplay was written by Alan McElroy. The movie stars Jon Foo, Kelly Overton, Hiroyuki Tagawa, Ian Anthony Dale, Cung Le, Darrin Dewitt Henson and Luke Goss.

The movie is due to be released in Japan on March 6 and directly to DVD and Blu-ray in the U.K. on April 5. A U.S. release date has yet to be set.
