Trailer Talk: ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I’

— by ALEXA MILAN —

It’s only been a few short weeks since a teaser trailer for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I” debuted at the MTV Movie Awards, but the full-length trailer has arrived and looks like an epic conclusion to the series. The trailer is actually for both parts of “Deathly Hallows” and gives fans a taste of some of the story’s most pivotal moments.

Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) opt not to return to Hogwarts for their final year in order to find and destroy the remaining horcruxes, which contain the severed pieces of Voldemort’s soul. Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) is growing closer to gaining control over the wizard world as the ministry threatens to crumble under corruption, Snatchers are on the hunt for Muggle-borns and “blood traitors” and Hogwarts is no longer the safe, magical place it once was.

The intensity of their mission threatens to strain the trio’s friendship, and with a little support from Dumbledore’s Army, Harry must destroy Voldemort once and for all or risk being destroyed himself. As the prophecy in “Order of the Phoenix” revealed, neither can live while the other survives.

Maybe it’s just because I’m a huge “Harry Potter” nerd, but I was really blown away by this trailer. I think it actually gave me goosebumps. The trailer calls it “the motion picture event of a generation,” and I’m inclined to agree. I picked up my first “Harry Potter” book at age 11 and never looked back. It was sad enough when I closed the last book, but now at age 22, the movies are about to end as well.

“Harry Potter” clearly appeals to all ages, but it was my generation that really grew up with Harry as he grew up, and I’m pleased to see that at least based on this trailer, the “Deathly Hallows” film looks like a worth end to the series.

Part 1 hits theaters Nov. 19, 2010, and Part 2 opens July 15, 2011.
