Trailer Talk: ‘Oh My God’

— by JON MARTINCIC —

“Oh My God” is Peter Roger’s documentary about the variety of religious views around the world and their perspective of who they believe to be our higher power.

There are also a series of guest appearances from notable faces including Hugh Jackman, Ringo Starr and David Copperfield.

The trailer seems to demonstrate a wide range of personalities and views from around the world. These could be interpreted in many different ways, as they were to me.

After the first viewing of this trailer, I wasn’t too excited about Roger’s work. The product looked to be technically sound, but there was something I just couldn’t put my finger on. It turned out to be the edit. The trailer was cut together almost building emotions up, for those of us that believe, then comes some lines that seem almost insulting. I guess it was a little bit of a shock.

My second viewing changed my opinion. I was more open to hearing alternative points, as well as opposing views. There are very few times I condone censorship; when children aren’t prepared for uncensored content and when the material is used for propaganda. Religion shouldn’t be one of them. I feel that aspect is what creates interest in this particular documentary.

If this does prove to avoid bias, which is very difficult considering the subject matter, then I’d say it’s worth a viewing. It certainly won’t be for everyone, documentaries rarely are, but it seems to have potential within its genre.

“Oh My God” is set to be released Nov. 13, 2009.
