Kevin Smith wrote “Red State” around the same time he penned “Zack & Miri Make a Porno.” Let that ruminate for a second. The two films couldn’t be any more different than each other. “Zack & Miri” was a feel-good film about two friends who make an adult movie. Amusing shenanigans occurred throughout the pair’s creative process and, in the end, the viewer left the theater with a grin. “Red State” is definitely not a warm and fuzzy flick. It’s a modern day horror story about a bunch of boys who, after responding to a sex ad online, are held captive by a group of fundamentalist fanatics.
Included in the red-band trailer below are a couple quick blood-curdling sequences, well executed to terrifying precision by Academy Award-winner Melissa Leo and one of Quentin Tarantino’s favorite actors Michael Parks.
Because of the current political climate, “Red State” is sure to be controversial. But it’s nothing Kevin Smith hasn’t handled before. When “Dogma” was due to hit theaters, the Catholic Church staged a boycott and accused Disney of being anti-Catholic. To distance themselves from the bad publicity, the studio then pushed the film an entire year and sold the films distribution rights to Lionsgate Entertainment.
“Red State” opens on Oct. 19 against fierce competition. “Paranormal Activity 3” is slated for Oct. 21 and “The Thing” hits a week prior on the 14th. However, unlike the other films, humans are behind the horror — not a supernatural entity or alien being.

This is the first Kevin Smith movie that I have no desire to see, but that has more to do with the fact that it’s a horror movie.
