I really didn’t know what to expect from “Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back.”
I actually never saw the first one. So, in an effort to give you a fair trailer review for part 2 of the series, I went ahead and watched the first one.
What did I think? I can say with great ease that it was entertaining and fun. But, was it hilarious? Did I crack up? At times I did, and I enjoyed it.
Now, returning to the movie trailer this article is about, and we have embedded below, “Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back, is in my opinion, genius. Let me explain. First of all, and most important to me, was the fact that it cracked me up. Yes, I cracked up just watching this trailer. As a matter of fact, it was a big part of why I rushed and watched the first movie. I think that there are funny trailers and hilarious trailers. Hilarious trailers are infrequent these days. I remember the days when I was at a full theater, watching the pre-movie trailers, for movies like “Home Alone” and “Dumb and Dumber,” even “The Nutty Professor, and the crowds went wild, the laughter roared throughout. Great times, but I miss them. Now with “Space Chimps 2,” it seems that they just let loose, everyone is having fun and each character’s uniqueness is funnily exploited successfully.
Unfortunately, my favorite characters in the movie and movie’s trailer are not the chimps, it’s really all the other characters. In the first movie, the Alien Zartog is voiced by Jeff Daniels (of “Dumb and Dumber,” “State of Play” and “Paperman”) and I don’t think I need to tell you he usually steals the show.
Then you have the wise-cracking-I-am-overworked mission control crew. These characters deserve their own movie I truly enjoyed their tiny bit in the trailer. Then there is Dr. Jagu, if you don’t know his character, just wait and watch him dance “the robot” in the end of the trailer, you will be a fan. Finally, there is SNL’s Andy Samberg returning from the first movie and voicing Ham III, the protagonist, although he seems by the trailer and the movie description below to not be the main character for the sequel.
Check out the official description: “Space Chimps 2” follows Comet (Zach Shad), the techno chimp who longs to be taken as a fully-fledged space chimp. Comet journeys to Planet Malory where he bonds with the alien Kilowatt, and lives out his ultimate fantasy. However, it’s time for Comet to prove himself when the feared alien ruler Sarto takes over Mission Control. Comet must show he has the right skills, and join fellow chimps Ham (Andy Samberg), Luna (Cheryl Hines) and Titan (Patrick Warburton) to save the day. The original film saw a crew of resourceful chimpanzees blasted into outer space on a vital mission — now the adventure continues in 3D.
The Chimp Academy will be recruiting again when “Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back” opens in June.
