Between “Wet Hot American Summer” and “Role Models,” actor Paul Rudd and writer/director David Wain have proven they’re adept at R-rated comedy hijinks. And based on the new trailer for their latest movie, “Wanderlust,” the continuation of their creative partnership looks promising.
Rudd and his one-time “Friends” co-star Jennifer Aniston play George and Linda, a Manhattan couple caught up in the stress and fast pace of the big city. When George is fired, he and Linda decide to relocate to Atlanta, where his brother has promised him a job. But on their way there, they stumble across a place that could be the answer to their problems.
Elysium is a commune full of quirky, laid-back people who have left the material world behind. Elysium’s residents invite George and Linda to stay, so the couple decide to give the commune’s idyllic way of life a try. It’s the complete opposite of the life they’re used to, a philosophy that could be a blessing or a curse.
Based on this first look at the movie, I think “Wanderlust” has a lot going for it. I found Rudd and Wain’s last collaboration, the underrated “Role Models,” to be quite funny and charming, thanks in large part to Rudd’s consistent everyman humor. Plus with the majority of the country still feeling the brunt of a struggling economy, the escape-the-woes-of-unemployment storyline should resonate with audiences. Add Judd Apatow as producer and a supporting cast that includes Justin Theroux, Malin Akerman, Kathryn Hahn, Jo Lo Truglio, Lauren Ambrose, Michaela Watkins, Ken Marino and Alan Alda, and I’m sold.
“Wanderlust” hits theaters Feb. 24.
