Two Clips from ‘Solomon Kane’

— by ROBERT DeFEIS —

When I was watching these two clips, I have to say it was the first time I thought to myself that I really wished these clips were longer. Usually, it gives you just enough to know whether of not you like the film. This time, it will leave you staring at the screen wanting more and for me they just filled a seat in the theater.

“Solomon Kane” has that dark and gritty undertone and, while the film is set in 17th century, it will not bore any audience. When the story opens, Kane is a mercenary of Queen Elizabeth I fighting in Africa, but after an encounter with a demon, The Reaper, he realizes he must seek redemption or have his soul damned to Hell. As he tries to live a life of peace, his plans are soon upset by an evil sorcerer that forces him to pick up his arms once more.

Robert E. Howard — a man who was born in 1908 and died in 1936 — created “Solomon Kane.” For me, it seems this man was way ahead of his time creating such dark and grizzly work. His writings were described as a bloody, dark, fatalistic outlook fueled by suicidal intense depressive tendencies and wide-ranging studies in history, warfare, philosophy and poetry. I don’t think anyone has ever seen such an outlandish description as that.

Michael J. Bassett is at the helm of this movie, while James Purefoy takes the lead role as Soloman.

The first clip shows the family that Soloman is traveling with being overrun by raiders. Right about when we were going to find out why it says, “that’s enough you can only see the rest in theaters.”

The second shows them in an underground hall where mirrors lie all around them. There are some extremely large creatures living in those mirrors and as he tries to get through, most of his men get yanked through and it leaves the rest back to back fighting for their lives.

“Solomon Kane” has a TBA release date for the U.S., but will hit sometime in 2010.
