It seems that with every genre or craze comes a parody flick: “Scary Movie,” “Date Movies,” “Epic Movie,” “Disaster Movie,” even “Meet the Spartans.” Now, the team behind the aforementioned movies is tackling the vampire frenzy in “Vampires Suck.”
Much like in the “Twilight” movies, which appear to be the primary source material for this spoof, Becca Crane (Jenn Proske) moves to a small town only to find herself torn between a vampire and a werewolf, appropriately named Edward (Matt Lanter) and Jacob (Chris Riggi). But in addition to worrying about supernatural shenanigans, Becca and Co. find themselves entangled with the likes of Alice in Wonderland, Lady Gaga and the cast of “Jersey Shore.”
I’m not really sure how those last three things fit in with the vampire theme, but if it’s popular, you can bet writer-directors Jason Friedberg and Adam Seltzer will beat it to death. I enjoyed the first “Scary Movie,” but once their parodies got into “Disaster Movie” and “Meet the Spartans” territory, they just felt stale.
In the right hands, a vampire parody has the potential to be hilarious because there is so much material from which to draw, but I didn’t laugh once during the “Vampires Suck” trailer and clips. Now if the superior team of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright ever decide to spoof vampire movies, you can bet I’ll be the first in line.
