As if taking a queue from “Smallville,” Diane Lane, an actress only in her mid-40s, has been cast as Martha Kent, Superman’s Earth mother. I can dig it!
Lane is a wonderful actress and she is definitely admired. The only negative thing I foresee is Lane doesn’t look that much older than Henry Cavill, who is twenty-seven. But hey, dropping Mama Kent’s age worked for Annette O’Toole. It worked for Papa Kent who was played by, Bo Duke … I mean John Schneider. As of now, Kevin Costner is rumored to be playing Clark’s adoptive father.
It could be that Zack Snyder and Chris Nolan are fans of the popular CW series or maybe they are mirroring a model that definitely works.
In a press release, Snyder had this to say about his latest casting decision: “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”
That said, the director made the right choice.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Oscar®-nominated actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent has ever known, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.
Snyder stated, “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”
Lane will star with Henry Cavill, who was recently announced as the new Clark Kent/Superman.
Lane earned an Academy Award® nomination for her performance in the 2002 drama “Unfaithful.” She most recently starred in the family hit “Secretariat.” She next stars in the HBO feature “Cinema Verite,” opposite Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini. Lane’s long list of film credits also includes “Nights in Rodanthe,” “Hollywoodland,” “Must Love Dogs,” “Under the Tuscan Sun,” “The Perfect Storm,” “My Dog Skip,” “Chaplin,” “The Cotton Club” and “A Little Romance,” to name only a portion.
Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.
Slated for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Lane is certainly a great Superman name!
I think I will say “Yay”, I agree that she doesn’t look much older than Cavill, but still you are right, it could work 🙂
I think that Lane is a great actress and she has blown me away in such films as “Chaplin” and the more recent “Secretariat.” So I am all for her in the new Superman!
Great choice for martha. I think she will be just fine. Plus I think it would be good to go sv root with younger parents to make the kent family seem more real and all that. Plus also they could age diane to with makeup if they want her to look older.
I am loving this cast that is being brought together for MOS. But, Henry still has a lot of work to do to win me over. But, I am positively optimistic.
