Steve Carell and Tina Fey are two of the funniest people on TV, consistently delivering laugh after laugh on their back-to-back NBC comedies, “The Office” and “30 Rock.” I’m actually surprised they’ve never acted together before. But now these two gifted comedians are finally gracing the big screen together in “Date Night.”
Carell and Fey play Phil and Claire Foster, a bored married couple leading fairly mundane lives. For a change of pace, they leave the kids with a baby-sitter and head out to New York City for a night of romance. When they can’t get a table at a fancy restaurant, they steal another couple’s reservation, leading to a case of mistaken identity that leaves them running from two men (rapper Common and Jimmi Simpson, aka Liam McPoyle of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) who want to kill them.
“Date Night” has gotten fairly mixed reviews so far (it has a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes). It has the potential to be overly predictable, possibly reaching to far for a few laughs. But it has such a great cast this movie is going to be hard to ignore. In addition to Carell and Fey, the film stars Mark Wahlberg, Taraji P. Henson, Leighton Meester, Kristen Wiig, Mark Ruffalo, James Franco and Mila Kunis. Carell and Fey are such charming leads that even if the movie turns out to be sub-par, I’m willing to give it a chance.
“Date Night” opens April 9. Check out eight clips from the movie below.
