Currently in the “facepalm” section of films in development — alongside the “Yogi Bear” movie — is “The Smurfs.”
The movie is starting to take shape and below you can see the first leaked image from the film of one of the titular characters. I will try and remain professional but I can assume you may already be able to sense the lack of interest in yet another remake, and (I’d wager) a poor one at that.
To be fair, though, and semi-professional, I can imagine when I take my film geek hat off that this is the sort of film I’ll be forced to rent out for my kids to watch (and skip through quickly when they aren’t looking).
“The Smurfs” will be helmed by Raja Gosnell (of “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” — gah!) and deals with the Smurfs living in medieval times having to escape the clutches of an evil wizard obsessed with capturing them for his own sinister purposes — fascinating!
As much as I think the recent spate of kiddie flicks like “Alvin and the Chipmunks” and “Scooby Doo” are nonsensical and weak, they evidently have found an audience. Likewise, I’m sure “The Smurfs,” which is intended as a launching pad for a trilogy, will find an audience with a penchant for lame, mind-numbingly poor films when it is released next year.
See, I’m professional to the end.
“The Smurfs” is due for release July 29, 2011.

That’s pretty smurfing disturbing.
I look forward to seeing who takes a shameless payday to play Gargamel.
^ It will be tough to beat the slumming Robert De Niro did in “The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle.”
If the IMDB page is to be trusted, Wallace Shawn is in talks to do it. Inconceivable!
Glad you’re all feeling the same way I do about this project!
i will never watch this!! lol
