Trailer Talk: ‘Solitary Man’

— by ROBERT DeFEIS —

“Solitary Man” is a film about a guy who reaches a crossroads in his life and systematically destroys everything around him. That man is Michael Douglas, who plays Ben Kalmen, a former owner of a car dealership chain whose career and marriage were destroyed by his business and romantic indiscretions. Ben now keeps a grip on the world through his relationships with women — many women.

Every time I watch Michael Douglas as an actor, there is something there that almost makes me feel that he never actually has to act. Almost like every character he plays is a part of him, like all of those things have happened to him and he can draw from it.

In this trailer, comedy looks top be part of a pretty decent plot. I mean what guy wants to think to himself when he becomes old that he won’t be able to get women anymore? This film shows that if you’re alone and old, well, there is still hope.

Douglas isn’t alone, though, as there is a fantastic supporting cast, which consists of Mary Louise Parker, Danny Devito, Jesse Eisenberg, Susan Sarandon and Jenna Fischer.

The trailer shows a very upbeat sexy comedic performance by all involved and this is a film I just might have to add to my list to go see.

“Solitary Man” — directed by Brian Koppelman and David Levien and written by Brian Koppelman — was shown at the Toronto Film Festival. Its rights recently were picked up by Anchor Bay and a limited release is tentatively scheduled for May 7.

I might see this one. I don’t like Mary Louise Parker as much. She is such a flake on Weeds.

I know what you mean about Michael Douglas. I love him; this looks like a good movie to see just because he’s in it!
