Go ‘Under the Mountain’ and Behind the Scenes

— by ALEXA MILAN —

I hadn’t heard of “Under the Mountain,” a New Zealand-set fantasy from “Black Sheep” director Jonathan King, but these behind the scenes featurettes look pretty cool.

Based on the novel by Maurice Gee, the film follows teenage twins Theo (Tom Cameron) and Rachel (Sophie McBride), who run into some dark forces while visiting their aunt and uncle in Auckland. When they decide to investigate the eerie house next door, they discover a race of shape-shifting creatures called the Wilberforces that reside beneath a ring of dormant volcanoes.

A mysterious stranger named Mr. Jones (Sam Neill) informs them that as twins, they have the power to destroy the Wilberforces, and it’s up to them to put a stop to the creatures for good.

It’s hard to tell how the movie will actually turn out based on this featurette, but it looks like it could potentially be an intriguing and dark fantasy. The featurette offers a sneak peek at some of the special effects used in the movie, including animatronics, make-up and CGI. I love watching featurettes like this and seeing how much detail the costume designers and make-up and effects artists put into their work.

No U.S. release date has been set for “Under the Mountain.”

Since I don’t live Down Under, I have a feeling I won’t be seeing this any time soon.
