Meet ‘the Single Ladies’ (AKA The Chipettes)

— by ALEXA MILAN —

Two years ago, children were delighted and most older audiences were mortified by a trio of CGI chipmunks wreaking havoc for Jason Lee. Somehow, this family film raked in the big bucks at the box office, and now audiences will be treated to — or tortured by — a second installment.

In “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” music sensations Alvin (Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) return to school and attempt to save the school’s music program by winning a battle of the bands competition. But what seems like an easy task is complicated by a trio of female singing chipmunks known as The Chipettes. Musical rivalry and romantic interest ensue.

Young children will probably love seeing these singing cuddly creatures grace the screen once again, but older moviegoers will likely be turned off by cringe-inducing scenes like the one below, in which The Chipettes perform their rendition of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies.”

“The Squeakquel” also stars Zachary Levi and David Cross and features the voices of Amy Poehler, Anna Faris and Christina Applegate.

The film opens Dec. 23, just in time for the Christmas rush of family moviegoers.

Man, you could have made a fantastic comedy with all of that talent.

^What do you mean “could have”?! What does this movie look like…oh wait, no, you’re right. Never mind.

I’m sure I am putting more thought into this movie than necessary, but why are high school aged chipmunks singing about getting married? Wasn’t there a better pop song to use?

Watching Jason Lee’s dignity wither away and die makes my physically uncomfortable.
