Short Film Theater: ‘I F***ing Hate You’

Breakups — when played for drama rather than comedy — are never easy to watch. Luckily, the breakup in “I F***ing Hate You” only lasts for about nine minutes.

Directed and co-written by Zak Forsman, “I F***ing Hate You” is a short film that gives you a brief glimpse of a relationship taking its dying breath. Ron (played by John T. Woods) stops by his ex-girlfriend, Carol’s (played by Marion Kerr — who could easily play Amy Adams’ long-lost twin) apartment under the pretense of wanting to return some of the stuff she left at his place. Carol is hosting a dinner party and is less than pleased with Ron for dropping by unannounced. When she tells him the only belonging she cares about getting back if her mug, he insists she better come by to get it now or else he’s donating it. She reluctantly agrees, and Ron takes the opportunity as a last-ditch effort to win her back.

The film tells a very convincing story in its nine short minutes, and Woods and Kerr deftly portray their roles of desperate hopeful and the one who’s moved on. The shaky-cam filming started to make me dizzy after a couple of minutes, but it does give the short a homespun, down to earth feel.

“I F***ing Hate You” played at a variety of film festivals throughout 2008 and can be seen in its entirety below.

(Warning: As you may imagine from its title, this short film contains obscene language.)
