‘Shrek’ Glasses Recalled by McDonald’s

— by ALEXA MILAN —

It looks like people may have a reason to fear lovable ogre Shrek after all. McDonald’s recalled 12 million promotional “Shrek” glasses Friday because they contain the toxic metal cadmium.

Cadmium can be harmful if people are exposed to it long-term, so McDonald’s voluntarily recalled the glasses when it was discovered the designs on the outside of the glasses contain the substance. As first reported by the Los Angeles Times, McDonald’s hasn’t received word of any injuries, but the fast food chain is offering customers who purchased the glasses a full refund.

The New Jersey company that manufactured the glasses learned of the issue on Thursday and told the Associated Press that they are looking into it.

So what does this mean for McDonald’s? The Wall Street Journal reports that the chain’s shares in the New York Stock Exchange dipped $1.15 to $66.70 on Friday. The Journal article also indicates that McDonald’s may be concerned about whether families will now start questioning the safety of McDonald’s products.

What do you think of the McDonalds recall? Does it affect your view of the chain? Do you own one of the 12 million glasses that were recalled? Sound off in the comments section.
