Though I have yet to see “Moon” (unfortunately the theaters in my area never got it), it certainly sounds like one of the most intriguing films of 2009. Fans of the movie and those like me who want to experience it but never caught it in theaters can now check out this low-budget sci-fi thriller on DVD.
Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) has spent the past three years working for Lunar Industries, harvesting a fuel called helium-3 and sending it back to Earth. He is the only person at the lunar station, his only companion an intelligent computer called GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey). He has remained completely isolated from his wife and young daughter because a technical malfunction has made direct communication with Earth impossible.
A few weeks before his contract is scheduled to end, Sam has an accident and wakes up to find that he might not be alone after all. He doubts his sanity and his true self as it becomes increasingly evident that nothing on the moon is what it appears to be.
“Moon” received mostly positive reviews when it was released last summer and garnered particularly high praise for Rockwell’s intense performance and the direction of newcomer Duncan Jones. The movie promises to have lots of twists and turns, and I for one am excited to see Jones’ more intimate style of sci-fi.
