Three Clips from ‘The American’

— by RACHEL COYNE —

I’m guessing the makers of “The American” think that George Clooney will be enough to get people to see the action-thriller, because they’re being pretty tight-lipped on what the movie is actually about.

Here’s what my extensive research has uncovered: George Clooney is an American assassin-for-hire who wants out of the biz, but must go to Italy for “one last job” before he’s free. You’re welcome.

In this trio of scenes we learn three things about Clooney’s character:

    1. He’s a pretty decent marksman, even while riding a scooter.
    2. He can sense a sniper like a cat hearing a can opener.
    3. He is not supposed to make friends.

But I think the real question on everyone’s mind is, “When does he learn how to Eat (Pray, Love)?!”

I dont know, Im still on the fence about being excited for this one. George doesn’t seem like a legitimate spy to me.

I just saw this movie yesterday and I have to say it is an amazing piece of film-making. Whether it’s a good movie or not, that is up for debate. I will say this. This isn’t an Action Drama, this is just a plain Drama. There is no action in this movie. This movie is performance and detail driven. This movie requires a lot attention and concentration in order to fully appreciate it’s genius.

The reason they are tight lipped about the story is because even as you watch the movie they are tight lipped about the story. They don’t tell you a damn thing, you have to figure everything out on your own through subtle hints. Think about that. Are you willing to put in that work? If you’re not, skip this movie, you’re going to hate it. But if you are willing to use your brain I think you’ll enjoy this movie quite a bit.
