Trailer Talk: ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’

— by RACHEL COYNE —

Out of all the biopic movies ever made, how many are about musicians? I’m actually curious, because I’m willing to bet the percentage is pretty high. There are millions of people with stories interesting enough to warrant being put on film, but filmmakers (and their audiences) just can’t get enough of exploring the lives of musicians. And with a story that revolves around sex, drugs and rock & roll, who can blame them?

I’m not British, and I’ve never been into the punk rock scene, so I have no idea who Ian Dury was. But “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll” focuses on the story of his life and how he overcame being crippled by polio as a child to become one of the most prominent figures in British punk during the 1970s. Dury is played by Andy Serkis, probably best known in the States for playing Gollum in the “Lord of the Rings” movies. But there’s no CGI magic going on here, as Serkis seems to be putting every raw emotion he has into his performance.

I do enjoy a good musical biopic, but due to my lack of interest in this genre, I’ll probably skip “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.” But if I learned anything from watching “Ray” and “Walk the Line,” it better feature an early death of a younger brother if it hopes to be successful.

“Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll” will corrupt the U.K. youth on Jan. 8, but there are currently no plans for it to reach the U.S.
